What nano-ceramic film actually is
Nano-ceramic window film uses ceramic nanoparticles — typically 20 to 100 nanometers across — suspended in optical-grade polyethylene terephthalate (PET) substrate. The ceramic particles selectively absorb infrared radiation while remaining optically transparent to visible light. Unlike sputter films, which reflect infrared using thin metallic layers, ceramic films work through the particulate optical properties of ceramic itself.
The critical consequence: nano-ceramic film is metallic-free. That single property is why every modern automotive OEM tint program specifies ceramic, and why signal-sensitive architectural work (hospitals, offices with embedded antennas, buildings near cellular towers) has migrated from sputter to ceramic over the past decade.
How LUNOX manufactures Nano Ceramic Max and Plus
The performance ceiling on ceramic film is set by two production variables:
- Ceramic particle size uniformity. Ceramic particles that vary in diameter scatter visible light and drop VLT while adding haze. LUNOX's ceramic dispersion process holds particle size within a <15 nm tolerance — the same specification bar as optical-grade coatings for satellite optics.
- Multi-layer deposition. Nano Ceramic Max is a five-layer construction: hard coat, PET carrier, ceramic-particle layer, laminating adhesive, and mounting adhesive with release liner. Nano Ceramic Plus is a four-layer economy of the same chemistry. Both are produced on the same ISO Class-7 cleanroom lines that supply LUNOX's automotive OEM contracts.
Roll production runs at 152 cm × 30 m (60-inch × 100-foot) standard, with custom widths available from 90 cm to 183 cm on OEM programs. Every roll passes through 100% laser optical QC before it leaves the line — haze, VLT, TSER, and adhesion are checked continuously, not batch-sampled.

When ceramic wins vs sputter — and vice versa
Two questions decide the chemistry:
- Are you tinting a signal-sensitive glass? If the glass is on a vehicle, in a hospital, near cellular equipment, or in an office with embedded antennas — ceramic is the answer. Full stop.
- How dark do you need to go? At 5% VLT, ceramic and sputter deliver comparable IR rejection. At 50–70% VLT (clear protective), sputter's surface reflection wins on absolute TSER numbers. Below 35% VLT, ceramic and sputter are effectively interchangeable on thermal performance.
