What safety window film actually does

Safety window film is a laminated PET film applied to the interior surface of glass. Under impact — weather, break-in, accidental collision, blast — the film holds the shattered glass fragments bonded together rather than raining shards into the room. That single property drives three application categories:

  • Injury prevention. Glass shards from broken windows cause tens of thousands of injuries annually in weather events. Safety film keeps the shards bonded to the film surface.
  • Forced-entry delay. A film-covered window takes 20–90 seconds to breach vs 2–5 seconds for untreated glass. Enough delay to trigger alarms, deter attempts, or allow response.
  • Ballistic and blast containment. Heavy-gauge safety film (10–12 mil) contains blast energy per GSA test standards and mitigates ballistic threat.

ASTM testing and certifications

Every LUNOX safety film SKU is tested per the ASTM D-series standards buyers' specification teams verify against:

  • ASTM D 3652 — thickness
  • ASTM D 1003 — VLT, haze, UV transmittance
  • ASTM D 882 — tensile strength, elongation at break, Young's modulus
  • ASTM D 3330 — peel adhesion
  • GSA bomb-blast — 12 mil film, tested against blast-load spectra

Plus the standard LUNOX certification package: ISO 9001 on production, TÜV Rheinland third-party spec verification, RoHS environmental conformity, CoA per container.

Which industries source LUNOX safety film

  • Government — embassies, federal buildings, GSA bomb-blast compliance retrofits
  • Retail — storefront anti-smash, banking anti-hold-up, jewelry showcase glazing
  • Education — school-shooting mitigation, classroom and entrance forced-entry delay
  • Residential — hurricane-prone coastal regions, high-crime areas, home security retrofits
  • Commercial architectural — ground-floor retail glazing, lobby, atrium safety

What buyers typically ask next

What does safety window film actually do?

Safety window film is a laminated PET film applied to glass to hold shattered glass in place on impact — preventing secondary glass-shard injuries, delaying forced entry, and containing ballistic energy. On a broken window, safety film keeps the glass bonded together rather than raining shards into the room. Clear safety film preserves the glass's original appearance; tinted safety film combines impact protection with solar rejection.

What thicknesses does LUNOX safety film ship in?

Six thicknesses on the clear line — 2 mil (0.05 mm), 4 mil (0.10 mm), 7 mil (0.18 mm), 8 mil (0.20 mm), 10 mil (0.25 mm), 12 mil (0.30 mm). The 12 mil is GSA bomb-blast rated. Tinted safety line ships in 4 mil at multiple VLT tiers (2.3%, 16.8%, 27.6%, black-out). Silver-reflective safety at 4 mil and 8 mil for combined privacy + impact applications.

Which ASTM standards does safety film test to?

ASTM D 3652 (thickness), D 1003 (VLT / haze / UV), D 882 (tensile strength, elongation at break, Young's modulus), D 3330 (peel adhesion). Ballistic-rated films are additionally tested per GSA bomb-blast specifications. Every spec sheet lists the ASTM test method next to the value; buyers can request the third-party lab reports before spec commitment.

What's the difference between LUNOX safety and security film?

The terminology overlaps; industry usage varies. LUNOX uses 'safety' for films that hold shattered glass in place on accidental impact (weather, vandalism, secondary injury prevention). 'Security' typically means the same film specified against forced entry or ballistic threat — usually 7 mil or thicker with dedicated adhesive chemistry for maximum bonded holding force. Both categories ship under the same LUNOX safety film product line.

Which industries typically source safety film?

Government (embassies, federal buildings, GSA bomb-blast compliance), retail (storefront glass anti-smash, banking anti-hold-up), education (school-shooting mitigation, forced-entry delay on classrooms and entrances), residential (hurricane-prone regions, high-crime areas), commercial architectural (glazing on ground-floor retail and lobby).

What's the MOQ for OEM safety film?

500 rolls first order; 2,000 rolls for distributor tier; 2,000 rolls per SKU for custom-spec runs (custom thickness, custom tinted layer, custom width). Standard roll size 152 cm × 30 m. Custom widths 90–183 cm on OEM programs. Lead time 4–6 weeks stock; +2–3 weeks custom.

Does safety film block heat and UV like tinted window film?

Clear safety film blocks 99% UV but delivers minimal heat rejection (IR rejection ~10%) — it's engineered for structural integrity, not thermal performance. Tinted safety film combines both: 99% UV blocking, plus heat rejection at the level of standard dyed tint film. Buyers wanting maximum thermal performance plus impact protection typically layer sputter or ceramic film over clear safety film — LUNOX supplies both layers.

What's the warranty on safety window film?

10-year warranty on film integrity, adhesion, and structural performance under normal environmental exposure. Ballistic and bomb-blast test ratings are held for the film thickness spec at time of installation — a 12 mil bomb-blast rating remains valid for the life of the film provided it's installed per LUNOX's certified installer training. Warranty is issued in the OEM partner's name for private-label programs.
