Sputter Window Film for Curtain Wall: A Specifier's Guide

Architects spec'ing sputter film for commercial curtain wall projects keep running into the same six questions. This guide answers all of them — SHGC and U-value targets, thermal stress, installer certification, warranty mechanics, mockup process, and what to put in the project specification language.

1. SHGC and U-value targets

Commercial energy codes (ASHRAE 90.1, IECC, K-GBC) specify SHGC and U-value at the glazing assembly level, not at the film. A sputter film on the inboard surface of an IGU contributes ~0.15–0.25 to SHGC reduction, depending on the existing glass coating. For LUNOX Sputter Max series films:

Existing glassExisting SHGCWith LUNOX SputterNet SHGC reduction
Single-pane clear0.850.30–0.400.45–0.55
Single-pane tinted0.550.25–0.320.23–0.30
Standard IGU (no Low-E)0.700.28–0.350.35–0.42
IGU with Low-E #20.350.22–0.280.07–0.13

U-value impact from sputter film is small (~5–10% reduction) because film doesn't change the conductive path through the assembly. If your project needs U-value targets, sputter alone won't get you there — pair with secondary glazing or wait for the next IGU cycle.

2. Thermal stress analysis

Sputter film increases solar absorption in the outer pane of an IGU. On dark-tinted glass or laminated assemblies, that can elevate thermal stress to crack-risk levels. Required for spec: thermal stress analysis on every glazing type in the project. LUNOX runs this analysis as part of the OEM specification workflow:

  • Climate inputs: site temperature range, peak solar irradiance, glazing orientation.
  • Glass build-up: pane thickness, edge condition (annealed / heat-strengthened / tempered), interlayer (PVB / SGP / none), spacer type.
  • Output: predicted temperature differential, calculated stress, and pass/fail vs ASTM E2431.

For most existing commercial buildings the analysis comes back clean. Where it doesn't, LUNOX may recommend a higher-VLT sputter SKU or, in rare cases, ceramic film instead.

3. Installer certification

Sputter film installation on curtain wall requires:

  • Wet installation technique with the proprietary LUNOX activator solution. Dry installation on sputter is rarely successful at curtain-wall scale.
  • Boom-lift or BMU (Building Maintenance Unit) access. Most curtain-wall projects above floor 4 require BMU coordination with the building.
  • Certified installer training. LUNOX maintains an authorized installer list per country, refreshed annually. For non-listed countries, our QC team trains the contractor on site for the first 5–10% of project area.

4. Warranty terms

LUNOX flagship sputter (Max + Plus series) carries a 10-year material + installation warranty on authorized-installer projects, covering:

  • Color stability — no perceptible shift on standardized color difference (ΔE < 2) over the warranty term.
  • Adhesion — no edge lift, bubbling, or delamination.
  • Optical performance — VLT, IR, TSER maintained within ±5% of spec.
  • Surface durability — no oxidation or visible metal degradation.

Warranty is voided by: cleaning with abrasive chemicals, non-authorized re-installation, structural glass replacement, or post-installation building damage.

5. As-installed mockup

For projects over 1,000 m² LUNOX recommends an as-installed mockup at the architect's review prior to full mobilization. The mockup is typically:

  • A 4 m² area on the building's representative south or west elevation.
  • Installed by the actual project crew under LUNOX QC supervision.
  • Reviewed at 3 daylight conditions: morning (glancing sun), midday (peak), and evening (low angle).
  • Photographed from interior and exterior at architectural-review distances.

The mockup catches glazing-by-glazing surprises (frame interaction, reflective overlay on adjacent surfaces) before they become 50,000 m² mistakes.

6. Specification language

Sample spec section text for division 088300 (or your local equivalent):

2.X SPECIFIED PRODUCT
A. Architectural sputter window film shall be LUNOX Sputter Max series
   (or specifier-approved equal), magnetron-sputtered multi-layer construction,
   IR rejection ≥ 80%, TSER ≥ 65%, UV blocked ≥ 99%, VLT [spec %].

B. Film shall be installed by a LUNOX-certified installer using LUNOX-approved
wet-installation technique on the inboard surface of the specified glazing.

C. Warranty: 10-year material + installation against color shift, adhesion
   failure, and optical performance degradation.

D. Substrate compatibility: thermal stress analysis required prior to mobilization
for each unique glazing build-up in the project.

E. Mockup: 4 m² minimum at architect-designated location, reviewed before
   full mobilization.
